Glossary – Chemical Logistics

Chemical logistics is the specialised management of the transport, storage, handling and distribution of chemicals throughout the supply chain. It covers the movement of chemical products from manufacturers and production facilities to warehouses, terminals, industrial users and other customers. Because many chemicals are hazardous or classified as dangerous goods, chemical logistics requires significantly more attention to safety, regulatory compliance and risk management than conventional logistics.

The sector includes both packaged chemicals, such as drums, intermediate bulk containers (IBCs), cylinders and bags, and chemicals transported in bulk using tank trucks, tank containers, rail tank wagons or vessels. Chemical logistics can also involve specialised product groups such as gases, fuels, corrosive substances, toxic chemicals, lithium batteries and substances requiring temperature-controlled conditions.

Safety in chemical logistics

Safety is a fundamental part of chemical logistics. An incident involving a chemical product can result in fire, explosion, toxic exposure, environmental contamination or dangerous chemical reactions. Risks therefore have to be controlled throughout the complete logistics chain, including loading, transport, unloading, temporary storage, warehousing and internal handling.

An important principle is that transport safety and storage safety are closely connected but are not identical. Dangerous goods transport is governed by regulations such as ADR, RID, ADN, the IMDG Code and the ICAO Technical Instructions. Chemical warehouses may additionally be subject to national fire safety, environmental, occupational safety and major-accident legislation.

Safe chemical logistics therefore requires organisations to look beyond transport classification alone. Chemical compatibility, fire behaviour, containment, ventilation, emergency response and environmental risks can all influence how a chemical should be handled or stored.

Managing chemical logistics risks

Effective chemical logistics combines regulatory compliance with practical risk management. This includes correct classification of dangerous goods, suitable packaging and tanks, appropriate segregation of incompatible substances, safe loading and unloading procedures, trained personnel and effective emergency arrangements.

Information must also move reliably through the supply chain. Transport documents, safety data sheets, product information and operational instructions help carriers, warehouse operators and other parties understand the hazards they are dealing with.

International standards and industry best practices can support organisations operating across different jurisdictions. They provide a common safety framework where national requirements or operational practices may differ.

Ultimately, chemical logistics is not simply the transportation of chemicals from one location to another. It is the controlled management of chemical products throughout the supply chain, with the objective of protecting employees, transport operators, communities, property and the environment while allowing chemicals to be stored and moved efficiently.
